Linda P., NM

Aug 17, 2009 5:00:00 PM

Here is a story from Linda P. headed to New Mexico for fly fishing:

La Fresh goes fly fishing!

I have been fly fishing the beautiful San Juan river here in New Mexico for over 12 years. Basic amenities are something that you leave in the parking lot once you hike to the river. With that said, the visits to the bushes have certainly been upgraded with the addition of a few Feminine Hygiene wipes to my fishing vest. How compact and convenient! Like a good fishing rod, I don't go fishing without my wipes!

Great product!

Eager hikers demo bug repellents

August 3, 2009 by Scott Sandsberry

YAKIMA, Wash. — Anybody who hikes in the Cascades as much as the Cascadians knows all about mosquitos and biting flies. If you don’t pack along some bug repellent along with your water and lunch, you become lunch.

I don’t know about you, but I hate the smell of most DEET-based repellents. I’ve been meaning to put some non-DEET substances to the test for a while now, and the Tuesday hikers going to Earl Peak were willing to become test subjects.

The products:

• La Fresh all-natural, biodegradable towelettes , for which the active ingredient is peppermint oil. If anything, our group underused these; the product directions say adults “may need to use more than one towelette,” though each of our testers was given a single towelette.

• The “Don’t Bite Me! Patch,” a skin patch that’s Vitamin B1 and aloe-based and is reportedly good for 36 hours.

For someone wishing not to have that awful DEET smell when they’re out among the bugs, well, the results seemed pretty good for both of these products. While it wasn’t a particularly bad day for mosquitoes, the biting flies were out in force, and that made it interesting, since neither product makes any claims about protection against them.

Of the hikers who tried the patch: Pat Sexton had no bites of any kind, Ed Miley had one fly bite and JR Phillips was sufficiently impressed: “There was one fly lit on me,” he said, “and it left.” I had the patch, and I had two fly bites, but I seem to be a bug attractant, so by my standards that was a pretty good result.

Of the people who had the wipes: Mike McCutchen had one little fly bite, but after he did a second wipe with his towelette (he was the only tester who did a second application), he was bug-free for the rest of the day. Esther Lanphier had one mosquito bite and one fly bite. Greg Wallace said he had “a couple little fly bites on my legs, but I’m not sure if I put any on my legs.” And Sue Gunderson had no bites of any kind.

All in all, pretty good numbers for not having to put up any smelly repellent, right? But diligent, “prove it” shoppers might also want to consider our “control group,” the two hikers who used nothing at all.

Maurine Peck had one fly bite before she broke down and put on some DEET. And Ted Gamlem had no bites at all.

• The La Fresh towelettes are sold in travel stores and U.S.-Canada duty-free stores, or online (http://lafreshgroup.com/travel-wipes/outdoor-care). The “Don’t Bite Me! Patch” is available locally at Rite-Aid stores or online (www.dontbitemepatch.com).

La Fresh insect wipes

Trust me — no one wants to tangle with a bout of dengue fever, malaria or worse. Jul 30, 2009

Since most billfish live in warm, subtropical climes, there is no shortage of pesky insect pests awaiting your arrival back at the dock in most marlin hot spots. From blood-sucking no-see-ums in the Bahamas to black saltwater mosquitoes just about everywhere else, biting insects can make your trip miserable and even result in serious illness. Trust me — no one wants to tangle with a bout of dengue fever, malaria or worse.

All of the very best insect repellents contain DEET, or N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide. However, DEET is also an effective solvent and may dissolve some plastics, rayon, leather, and painted or varnished surfaces. It's also extremely noxious to fish. In fact, Dr. Keith Jones reports in his book Knowing Bass that most fish find DEET more repulsive than any other substance known to man.

No matter where I go in the world, biting insects will fly, crawl or slither through just about any obstacle to get to my sweet, tender flesh, so I'm forced to slather myself and my children with DEET whenever we step outdoors. It's the only thing I've ever found that keeps the bugs off — that is until I found La Fresh (www.lafreshgroup.com).

While I'm usually skeptical when it comes to "all-natural" repellents (not one has worked for me before), I was pleasantly surprised with La Fresh. La Fresh uses peppermint oil as its main ingredient, and you experience a slight tingling sensation and the pleasant smell of mint when you apply it. And more importantly, it seems to work for me, especially for 30-minute stretches — after that it's time to reapply. And while La Fresh doesn't seem to repel as long as products containing DEET, I feel much better using it on my kids.

La Fresh comes in handy disposable towelettes that make application a breeze — and a fresh smelling one at that.
